The first time you go snorkeling, if no one tells you these things in advance, you could be paying the price with your life.
Tip 1: Test your mask and snorkel in shallow water first.
Don't head straight for deep water. First, gear up in waist-deep water, bend down, and put your face in the water: does your mask leak?
Does your snorkel take in water? Only when everything feels solid should you venture further out.
(Clear vision means no panic underwater – anti-fog is actually part of safety too. The MM-X1's chemical anti-fog lasts 365 days, and its coating resists scratches,
so beginners don't have to worry about fogging while swimming.)

Tip 2 (Most Easily Overlooked): Never hold your breath!
The urge to "hold your breath and dive down" when you see fish is dangerous. Snorkeling is not freediving.
Taking big breaths before holding can lead to hyperventilation and shallow water blackout – you could suddenly lose consciousness,
just a meter or two from shore.
This happens every year. Don't test it.

Tip 3: Never go into the water alone.
Go with at least one buddy, and ideally have someone onshore keeping an eye on you.
If you're alone and something goes wrong, there's no time to call for help.

Tip 4: Check the sky and the sea before you go in.
When waves are high, rip currents are present, or the weather is turning, don't push it – no matter how good your gear is. Safety always comes first.

Your first snorkeling trip – stay safe and have fun.
