Mask Suddenly Fogged Underwater? 3 Quick Fixes

Date:2026-11-07     Views:15

When it comes to mask anti-fog, getting it ready beforehand is ideal. But what if you forget to prep before your dive, apply too little anti-fog solution, or your mask’s anti-fog performance fades with time? You’re already in the water, and the fog has rolled in.Preventive tricks won’t help anymore — you need underwater emergency fixes.

Trick 1: Mask Clearing

Mask clearing is a fundamental skill taught in every open-water course, and it’s also the most underrated method to clear fog underwater.

How to do it: Lift the top edge of your mask to let a small amount of seawater flow inside. Shake your head gently so the water swirls across the inside of the lens to rinse it. Then perform a standard mask clear to flush out the water along with the fog.

Trick 2: Spit Emergency Fix

If fog comes back quickly after clearing, or mask clearing is not convenient for you at the moment, saliva works as a quick backup.

Substances in saliva form a thin temporary film on the inner lens surface, slowing down condensation.

It’s easy to use: Take off your mask, spit a small amount of saliva on the inside of the lens, spread it evenly with your finger, then lightly rinse it with seawater before putting it back on.

Trick 3: Finger Wipe

When your vision is badly blurred and clearing or saliva is not an option, wiping the inner lens with your finger is the fastest emergency move.

However, oils from your fingers will stick to the anti-fog coating, weakening or even ruining its anti-fog performance.

Oil residue from sunscreen-covered hands is especially harmful to the anti-fog layer.浮潜安全常识 (3).png

These three underwater emergency tricks help you deal with fog once it appears. But what truly brings peace of mind is a mask that saves you from constant anti-fog hassle from the start.

What does that mean? You don’t have to remember to apply anti-fog solution before diving, rely on spit underwater, or cut your dive short because of fog.

Put it on and dive. No more worrying about fog ruining your dive. The better scenario: you dive knowing these emergency tricks, yet rarely need to use them.
