After getting your dive certification, you open a shopping app and search for "fin recommendations."
Your screen fills with carbon fiber. Light, responsive, highly efficient—the same ones the pros use. The reviews are all "kicking feels amazing" and
"unbeatable propulsion." You're tempted. Ready to hit buy.
Wait a second.
Ask yourself one question first: Is your current problem really that your fins aren't good enough?

Carbon fiber is great—but its greatness comes with a prerequisite.
Carbon fiber fins are indeed excellent gear. Light, quick-rebounding, highly efficient at power transfer—under the feet of a capable diver, they deliver noticeable performance gains.
But their "goodness" is built on one condition: your kicking technique is already stable.
Carbon fiber fins demand a lot from your technique. They're stiffer, springier, less forgiving. For someone with clean form, they're like wings on a tiger. For someone whose technique isn't yet set, they magnify every mistake—wrong ankle angle, uneven kicks, unstable body position—all of it gets "fed back" to you.
Plastic fins are the exact opposite. They're slow, heavy, and not very responsive—but they let you make mistakes. They give you time and space to adjust slowly, feel the water, and build muscle memory.

So when should you switch to carbon fiber?
No rush. Ask yourself these questions first:
Are your current fins really impossible to kick, or do you just feel they're "not advanced enough"?
How many times a month do you dive? If it's less than twice, any blade will feel about the same.
Is your kicking motion stable? If you're still adjusting ankle angle and rhythm, wait a little longer.
Have you tried someone else's carbon fiber fins? After trying them, did you genuinely feel a difference, or was it just "wanting"?
If you've passed all these questions, then carbon fiber fins are worth buying.

Your first pair of carbon fiber fins should be a reward for your technique, not a pacifier for your anxiety.
We make gear, and of course we want you to take great gear home. But what we hope for even more is this: that at the right time, you meet the right pair.
